30 Jan クロストーク #04 Part 4 of AIO’s “Art Cross Talk”
Off-Center – Re-locating contemporary art practice in a globalizing context
The 2020 Corona pandemic has very suddenly halted an extended phase of “creative” globalization defined by cross-border mobility and the dominating influence of biennial-triennial kind of big international art festivals that have, for the better or the worse, created a global standard in regard to contemporary art.
Having been restrained to a spatially defined context for a while has provided us with a perspective that was vanishing during our restless mobility and made us aware of how much movement and international cultural exchange had become a part of our everyday experience.
For many the forced confinement has triggered a re-focussing on local issues and opened up a new view on the environment in front of our eyes. We are able to discover things in our direct surroundings that at times can appear more exotic than some of the far away destinations that amazingly cheap airfares made so accessible to us.
With vaccination starting around the globe we can hope to get back to some form of normal soon, but the experience of a global pandemic has changed our perception in ways that we are still grasping to understand. As part of AIO’s “Art Cross Talk” series we would like to discuss this topics with a focus on being “Off-Center” and while sharing experiences of people from various locations and backgrounds.
We would like to invite you to participate in our online round-table on January 30. 2021 to share your localized experience and exchange ideas about possible future cooperations and common goals for post-Corona international exchange.
Besides introducing AIO we aim at connecting an international network of artists, curators and art spaces with some relation to Okinawa to facilitate artists residences to and from okinawa and also to realize exhibitions and art projects in Okinawa with international participation.
